The short version: SmoothCast processes everything on-device. We don't have servers that receive your recordings, we don't sell data, and we don't require an account to use the app.
What we collect
SmoothCast is designed to collect as little as possible. In normal use, your recordings never leave your device. The app functions fully offline.
- Recordings & edits — stored locally on your Mac. We never receive them.
- Captions — generated on-device using Apple's frameworks. Audio is never sent to the cloud.
- Diagnostics — if you opt in, anonymous crash reports may be shared to help us fix bugs. This is off by default and contains no recording content.
Permissions we request
macOS asks for these permissions the first time they're needed. You stay in control and can revoke them anytime in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Screen Recording — required to capture your screen or a window.
- Microphone — optional, only if you enable mic audio.
- Camera — optional, only if you enable the webcam bubble.
What we don't do
- We don't upload, stream, or back up your recordings to our servers.
- We don't sell, rent, or share personal data with advertisers.
- We don't track your activity across other apps or websites.
Third-party services
SmoothCast is built entirely with native Apple frameworks and does not bundle third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. If you choose to export and share a recording yourself, any platform you upload it to is governed by that platform's own privacy policy.
Data retention & deletion
Because your recordings live on your own Mac, you control retention completely — delete a project or clear your library at any time. Uninstalling SmoothCast removes the app; your exported files remain wherever you saved them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes, we'll update the date above and note significant changes on this page.
